This autumn, home decor can be characterized by one term: “back-to-basics.” Natural materials, simplicity in design, and a growing demand for eco-conscious products show that for this fall, home decorating is all about returning to our roots and slowing down to enjoy a more basic approach to better living.
Simplicity meets sleek sophistication in the form of the season’s most versatile new element, the color gray. A truly fashion forward shade and considered one of the “new neutrals,” gray is everywhere this year as major manufacturers will be incorporating it into many new designs and products. Far from drab and dull, gray on the walls is elegant and understated and comes in a variety of shades, many of which incorporate other colors such as a dash of violet or navy. New colors of paint recently made available offer a perfect compromise in the form of mixtures of gray and beige.
Accessorizing with silver is another way to bring this element into one’s home decor. Metallics are a strong theme in fall home decorating, and this is especially true of silver. Lustrous silver combined with soft grays were a favorite combination of designers this year, but even on its own silver is a welcome accessory. Fixtures such as sconces, door latches, and even chandeliers can be found in brushed nickel, an excellent way to bring the shine of silver into a space.
Natural looks are also a rising trend in accessories this autumn. Heavy, distressed wood, shearling, burnished leathers, and other such natural materials will be heavily featured in fall home decorating this year, but none more so than fur. Fur, whether real or faux, will be a much desired design element in home decor this year, particularly in the form of decorative pillows. Modern, high quality varieties of faux fur are made with new materials such as mod-acrylic fibers, and are just as beautiful to the eye – and luxurious to the touch – as the real thing.
Decorative pillows are the accessory of choice in the coming seasons, especially when used in combination with other current elements, such as fur or leather, textural linens and metallics. Colors of choice will be vibrant young citrus shades, as well as dramatic reds and corals.
Eco-awareness is one of the season’s most dominant features, as consumers increasingly demand “Green Design.” One of the most popular new examples of green products are “eco-silks,” textiles made with environmentally responsible materials. Designs incorporating recycled materials and metals and furniture made only with sustainable wood are becoming more widespread, as well as furniture that uses eco-conscious methods of construction, such as using powder pigments instead of liquid paint.
In addition to natural materials and simple designs, fall home decorating this year is all about individuality, whether it be through eclectically mixing different periods and designs to arrive at a unique personal style, or through incorporating handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork. The current theme for the coming season is quality craftsmanship and an individually inspired, earth friendly aesthetic.
